"Born in Ceylon, Whatmore was a right-hand opening batsman and brilliant slips fieldsman, whose aggressive batting was noted for hooks, pulls and powerful drives and won him seven Australian Test caps. No Victorian fieldsman has taken more catches than Whatmore's 123, mainly taken at slip. In 1995, following several seasons as the VCA's Coaching & Development Manager and four years as the Victorian Institute of Sport's Head Cricket Coach, Dav accepted the position of Sri Lankan national team coach, the side winning the 1996 World Cup soon afterwards. After two seasons at Lancashire, Dav was reappointed to the Sri Lankan post following the 1999 World Cup, but lost the post again after the 2003 World Cup. He was appointed coach of Bangladesh soon after.
Whatmore played many fine innings for Prahran, none better than his magnificent unbeaten 145 in the 1983/84 VCA Final win over Essendon at the Albert Ground. His career tally of 7994 is a Prahran record."
